Ever try to get seven woman to plan something?  HILARIOUS!  We have two Facebook email threads plus a Group wall going and we still can’t decide where to go dancing on a Friday night in Toronto.  But we sure are funny!

This morning FH was back to work on his ship (it’s a good thing I’m sick of ranting about the Navy because poor FH really got burned on this course he just took), so I was up early to drive him and hit the gym.

Worst. Run. Ever.

OK, not EVER…but in recent history at least.  I don’t know what was wrong with me, but I just could not muster up the energy for more than 3 minutes at a time.  It’s super frustrating that no matter how much I practice or how often I go or how hard I try, I just don’t really ever seem to get much better.  My lung capacity sucks and hasn’t shown any signs of improving…meh.

I still got through 1.62 miles though… that’s only about .10 less than I normally do. (2 minute warmup, 18 minute intervals, 3 minute cooldown)

For a Wednesday morning the weight area was really busy today.  The gym itself wasn’t overly busy, but the area I needed was extra popular…couldn’t get the tricep machine, couldn’t get the 25lb barbell, couldn’t get a good spot in front of mirror.  Weird.  So I settled in on a mat and got some extra core work in instead.

30 regular crunches

30 reverse crunches

30 bicycle crunches

30 side to side twists

2 x 1 minute plank (one on elbows, one on hands)

2 x 30 second side planks (one each side)

Thankfully my Pink Smoothie cheered me up!

I did have to supplement that smoothie with a piece of toast and peanut butter, along with my coffee though.  The holding power wasn’t great, but that could be because of my workout (such as it was).

For lunch I decided it was time to put more of the bread products in our fridge to use, and made a turkey and hummus sammich on a leftover deli style hot dog bun.  In the bun: organic hummus, matchstick carrots, red onion, tomato, deli turkey, and grainy dijon.

With a side plate of raw veggies, white cheddar, and pickles.

Now to prepare for the weekly neverending conference call!

Oh boy. How are any of us standing today?! 🙂

Last week I shot out a message to Angie and Lynn suggesting a girl’s night in since they were both having stressful weeks and it would be our chance to chat about the upcoming Blog Girls Toronto Get Together and to just unwind.

So last night the three of us got together with FOUR bottles of wine (one in the form of white sangria) and some healthy eats and treats.

Before long we were chatting up a storm and didn’t stop until somewhere after 3am! Had the girls not had to get up for previous engagements this morning, I’m pretty sure we might have pulled an all-nighter. As it was, poor Lynn had to be out the door around 8am and Angie followed by 9am. (I won’t mention that I slept until 10:30…ooops, just did! Sorry ladies!)

As with any gathering of food obsessed girls bloggers, the evening centered around the kitchen table. Lots of food, but all healthy and yummy! We all agreed to skip dinner so we could enjoy our snackfest and wine.

I made spinach dip with fresh veggies and organic corn tortilla chips and a fruit plate with a yogurt/PB2 dip (in honor of Angie and her devotion to PB2). I also made a white sangria which totally hit the spot on such a gloriously warm evening.

Lynn brought the fabulous cheeses and baguette. The whole wheat baguette was perfectly soft and lovely for spreading the soft cheese. Peppered brie. I think I ate half of it by myself! Plus herbed gouda, which had a sprinkling of caraway. Deeeelish.

Angie arrived with a grab bag of all kinds of things. Fresh organic strawberries and raspberries. OMG…so much better than the non-organics that are available right now. Two kinds of hummus. Maui-Wowie Skinny Sticks. My first try of these and they were awesome. She also brought dessert…Green & Black’s organic chocolate in Mayan Gold…dark chocolate with spiced orange. Soooo yummy with our wine!

And in true blogger girl fashion, we each contributed a Larabar to the table. The ever popular Coconut Cream from me, the recently returned to the market Peanut Butter Cookie from Lynn, and a Pecan Pie from Angie. Tonight, the PB took the prize since none of us had ever had it. Creamy deliciousness!

We chatted, drank, laughed, drank, giggled, and drank our way through the evening. Just as a girl’s night should be. Thanks for coming over ladies!!

So what I should do is just copy and paste Lynn’s post because she basically said it all! Even our pictures are all almost exactly the same. Thanks to our new friend Jen for taking on the position of group photographer for most of the day. (We should have taken a pic of her holding 6 bloody cameras at every photo op!)

I gave myself a 6:15am wake-up call. You all know that I am NOT a morning person, but I was so excited I popped right out of bed when my alarm went off. I had packed the night before, so really I just had to wash my face, brush my teeth and get dressed. I ran downstairs to throw breakfast together and assembled my egg salad sandwich. I was out the door before 7am. (I know, it must be a full moon or something right?) Stopped for those two large coffees I showed you in yesterday’s post and headed off to Lesley’s place to meet up with the gals. Lynn and Heather were already there, and when Angie and her friends Brooke, Sarah and Jen arrived we were off! Lesley offered to drive me, Heather and Lynn, so I had a leisurely time in the car to just chat and sip that second coffee. 🙂

We arrived at the Cape Split Hiking Trail around 9:30 and didn’t waste too much time getting started. 8km in, 8km out. Two more of Angie’s friends met us at the parking area, Lena and another Angie. It was muddier than we had hoped at the start and we spent a lot of time dodging mud bogs and taking side-routes just off the trail, but that just added to the adventure. We’d heard that there was about a 1/2 km stretch that is straight uphill, and while we did find the area it was more of a gradual incline so really no problem at all. I was super impressed with my stamina. I really didn’t ever get out of breath or sore at all. Near the end of the day, my hip joints started to ache…but that happens on level ground after a couple of hours so it had nothing to do with the hike. Apparently all of my hard work at the gym is paying off!!

When we reached the summit just after 11:30 we were all so in awe. We couldn’t have had a more gorgeous day!! The point is a nice grassy area with a vista view of ocean as far as the eye can see. We enjoyed our tasty lunches and the sun on our faces and fooled around taking photos and just enjoying the scenery.

By about 12:30 we figured we’d better start heading back. A little more tired and wishing for the end after about 6 more km but it was a great time. Knowing we were getting to the cars for a change of footwear made us less concerned about mud! By 2:30 we were soaking up the sun by the cars and comparing stories of wet and dirty feet. 🙂

We stopped for a much needed and well deserved pub lunch and then for coffee before making the drive back to town. What a day! Girls, I’m so glad we did it! Fantastic time! 🙂

What a day! I came home with a bundle of energy (likely fueled by my late day, post hike coffeeeeeee) but now I’m relaxing and totally pooped. I thought I’d break up my hike posting by doing food on this one and the actual fun recap on another. So here’s the boring part…come back tomorrow for a full report!!

– power fueled at 7am with an english muffin SLATHERED in pb & topped with sliced banana, brought along some grapes for the car ride but didn’t eat them (that’s too much food for me that early in the morning).

– due to time and lack of milk at home, stopped and picked up TWO large coffees (1 cream, 1 sugar…and that was even too much…that Timmy’s cream is hardcore!)

Lunch: preview photo
egg salad on this amazing multigrain Portugese bun, with brocolli sprouts
– carrot sticks w/ side of almond butter & dollop of honey
– Larabar (didn’t eat)
– apple (didn’t eat)
– gum

– trail mix: almonds, red skin peanuts, cashews, raisins, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, banana chips, dried cherries, dried apricots, dried pineapple, yogurt covered cranberries (ate about 1/2)

Dinner: post hike early dinner at The Port Pub

– Rojo Mojo Red Ale (& keep the water coming!)

Lobster Clubhouse with massive mound of deeeeeeeeelicious fries (I ate 1/2 the sammich and all of the fries…with mayo for dipping…the other half of that fabulous sammy is in my fridge for tomorrow)

For the drive home we stopped at the local home of Just Us! Coffee, where we browsed and bought a few treats to bring home. I opted for an afternoon Italian Roast coffee with a smidge of organic sugar and a splash of skim. Deeeeelish. Sorry, no photo of the coffee…but here’s some treaties I brought home: a Bumble Bar (Chai flavor!), mint dark chocolate (damn flash!), white chocolate trail mix bark, individual hot chocolates.

According to Angie’s heart rate monitor we burned somewhere around 1400 calories on our approximately 16km hike. Go us!!!

Can you guess what that’s all about?

That’s right!! 21 minutes straight running on the treadmill today!!! Woooooohoooooo. (yes, I’m a dork…but I’m just proud!)

So after lunch I did a bunch of work. For some reason Fridays are the best days for me to work on receivables (ie: email and phone people that are overdue!) so I got that out of the way, then continued to work on finishing the laundry, making the spare bed, making my bed, putting towels away, etc. I had a little snacky of a bit of spinach dip that I saved from last night, with three flatbread crackers I found hiding in the cupboard.

Got some more work done, got some eggs on to boil, moved the snow tires out of my car into the garage (got them switched off the car the other day….another move to tell Mother Nature Winter is over!), organized some recycling, ate a cookie….

Managed to actually get out the door by about 5:45. Picked up a couple of things to complete my lunch for tomorrow’s hike to Cape Split with the local blogger girls (weeeeeeeeeeee!), including a stop at Bulk Barn where I did NOT buy anything I didn’t set foot in there for. Nice. Realized there was no way I was going to make it through a hard workout without something more in my tummy though so I broke out an emergency Clif Bar and ate half on my way to the gym.

Treadmill: 2 minute warm up, 21 minute RUN, 2 minute cooldown. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Upper body:
– 3 sets of 12 tricep pulldowns (15 lbs), 3 sets of 12 bicep curls (25 lbs), 3 sets of 6 shoulder press (25 lbs)
– 3 sets of 5 assisted pushups (it doesn’t matter how much I work out, I still suck at pushups)
– 3 sets of different crunches
– front and both side planks
lots of stretching so I’m not too stiff on the hike tomorrow

When I got home I promptly put all of my gym gear in the wash along with a few other things I want for tomorrow, then I made the egg salad for my lunch, then showered, then ate dinner. Just a salad with the extra boiled egg. I wasn’t super hungry because I ended up finishing that Clif Bar after the gym, but I didn’t think it was a good idea to skip over dinner completely.

Prepped my pack and bag for tomorrow. Dried my hair so I don’t have to try to style it at 6am. Watched Cupid off the PRV (I love that show, I hope it gets picked up!). Trimmed my nails. And now sitting here far too late getting all caught up.

Up at 6am tomorrow to be out the door before 7am. Can’t wait to hike with all of the fabulous Halifax blog girls and some new friends!! 10 girls hiking a muddy trail. Stay tuned for pictures!

How to start the weekend off right:

Good company and a giant waffle!

Met up with Farm Girl and her itty bitty little man for a quick visit this morning over coffee and Cora’s crazy-huge fruit covered waffles (a common love between us two girls). Both of our men are working today, so it was a good time to get in a little girl talk and run some errands.

After leaving FG to run her own errands (crazy girl was taking her little boy to Bulk Barn…oh joy!) I made a stop at the post office, then hit the grocery store. Holy good God people. It was like Christmas shopping in there. I only needed butter and a couple of sale items so you would think I’d be in and out, but no way. Freaking insane line ups. I could have left, but I needed the butter for Easter cookies and it’s not like I was really in a hurry anyway. Mainly my arm was getting sore because I didn’t get a basket and wound up carrying a 2lb bag of carrots along with my other items all in one arm.

I had other errands to run after that, but opted to head straight to the gym instead. It is right across the street from the Cora’s/Sobey’s plaza I was at and I knew if I drove away I probably wouldn’t make it back. Good girl am I!

Workout was awesome!!

Cardio mixed bag: rowing machine 10 mins, treadmill jog 13 mins, recumbant bike 12 mins, Stairmaster 10 mins = 45 mins

Upper body: 3 sets x 12 reps: bicep curls w/ 25 pound bar, shoulder lifts w/ same bar, tricep pulldowns 15 pounds

Lower body: 3 sets x 12 reps: plie squats w/ 15 pound bar, stationary lunges w/ 8 pound weight in each hand, tiptoe calf raises w/ same weights

Abs, etc: 3 sets hamstring curls on the ball separated by 1 set regular crunches, 1 set reverse crunches, 30 second v-sit

I was wiped. But felt grrrrrreat! (yes, I’m a nerd.)

After my workout I was starving again (apparently that giant waffle doesn’t have much protein to it!) so I finally decided now was the time to break out the infamous Coconut Cream Larabar. Holy moly people! Angie is right. This is BY FAR the BEST freaking Larabar ever. No wonder they are impossible to find. People are hoarding them. Lighter and creamier than any other Larabar I’ve ever had….tastes so decadent! I will be hoarding them from now on too.

One of my errands was at Chapters so I just “had” to get a coffee while I wandered around. Starbucks double tall 1/2 sweet vanilla non-fat latte. Deeeelish. I’m an addict, I know.

Now after more running around I’m finally home, showered, and getting ready for my big Saturday night of chores, baking cookies, and tackling the big office project. Oh filing on a Saturday night, how I love you. bwahahahaha. I just had a little snacky of hummus, Kashi crackers and a few garlic olives to tide me over until I make dinner. And maybe there’s a little peanut butter bunny hiding in my pocket….but not for long!

I finished up a ton of work yesterday, so around 4:00 I “treated” myself to an early trip to the gym. I know, a “treat”! ha! I figured I might as well go and get it done with so I could relax and enjoy the rest of my Friday night. Not that I had any big plans, but I was looking forward to a date with my sofa.

I did exactly the same thing I did on Thursday….nice, solid interval run on the treadmill followed by crunches and bum exercises. I made a quick attempt at deadlifts again, but I feel like I’m going to hurt my back so I need to stop one of the trainers and get them to show me the correct method.

Made a stop at the Bulk Barn on the way home, and while there I got myself a couple little treats and let me tell you how proud I am that I only ate exactly what I planned and haven’t just rampaged through them. 🙂 I had the 10 previously mentioned Easter malt eggs while I watched TV last night and taste tested a few of the dry roasted peanuts and chocolatey snack mix, but that was all. Good girl!

After my late shower and comfy time on the sofa, I came up to peruse yogadownload.com some more. Unfortunately the site was having some display issues, so I didn’t spend a lot of time looking. Instead I opted to download two more freebies that I could see the descriptions for….Detox #1 and Lunar Flow #1. I decided to try out the Detox practice before bed, and aside from the crazy Warrior 3 that I sooooo cannot do yet, it was a good session. Lots of twists and folds for cleansing the body…it was great after the week of working out I’ve had.

This morning I got up early to meet Tasha, Lynn, Farm Girl, and Angie downtown for breaky. To read the story of our day head on over to Angie’s blog or Lynn’s blog since they have both already documented our day’s escapades. 🙂 Leave it to a group of food bloggers to spend their girl time eating at Cora’s, drinking at Starbucks, and grocery shopping at Pete’s Frootique!

During our trip to Pete’s I picked up a few veggies…avocados because I’ve been on a real mexi kick lately, brussel sprouts because they were so beautiful, fresh carrots because I love me some good carrots with hummus (which is waiting patiently in the fridge). Lynn pointed out a new caramel flavor of Liberte yogurt, so I grabbed that and then I also finally got to partake of the Pete’s cheese counter because FH will finally be home on Monday (yaaaaieeeee!!) and we always have a wine & cheese dinner to celebrate his return. I got four kinds of cheese, a couple of links of our favorite salami, and a loaf of dense cheesy bread. I will add some olives and crackers and fruit to the plate when it’s time to serve. FH is in charge of the vino. I also picked up ONE beautiful truffle from the fancy chocolate counter…it was perfect and yummy! I could have eaten a whole selection but I bought just one and I’m glad I did.

By the time I got home I was feeling tired and lazy, but I chugged some water and made a small snack of deli turkey and pickles with a handful of the dry roasted peanuts and felt much better. So I changed my clothes and hauled myself off to the gym after about an hour of downtime. 6:00 on a Saturday night and the gym was a ghost town. Guess there’s only a few of us lame-o’s with nothing better to do on a Saturday evening. haha.

So I hit the treadmill again because that seems to be the cardio of choice this week. Warmed up and got running, doing the same interval pattern that worked so well the last two days. I decided to make today a longer session so when I finished up my 25 minutes I jumped over to the elliptical and did another 25 minutes there on the interval setting. Finished up with the ever popular bum exercises and crunches.

Came home and made another nice big salad with ranch & salsa, alongside a couple of baked chicken nuggets and Superfries. Sort of seems to be my “avoid the fast food” meal of late, and although it’s not the healthiest choice it works out quite calorie friendly considering.

Had myself a nice long bath, read a couple of magazines, enjoyed a dessert of a banana oatmeal muffin topped with some of the new chocolate PB2 I procured from Angie today. That’s right another pb2 fan in the house! Angie has done a great job promoting this stuff!

And now after this lengthy post I am off to bed. Tomorrow is warm yoga and a few chores and errands.
